you should have picked an interest of unfathomable depth

your right cheek pressed against the plaster of heaven where
the light stretches over the entrance
above your vision
the lines come down into your eye
like the lines they drew you in elementary school
perspective drawing

but those lines are not three dimensional
they’re tethers

like a fish hook or a yoke

heaven-you reels in earth-you
heaven-you climbs atop earth-you’s back
like a water buffalo set
to puddle rice fields

this puddle is the sky
this the moon
this puddle is your brain
falling into the earth
falling down into the arms
of a black mother Ceres with her
white teeth and blind eyes
staring at your heart

where now and when
by my watchword spend down
the sheets and rafts
uncork the name of my father
who rests atop my lap
by the time you sleep in a new country
and the sky follows over you
coloring your hair and eyes and smock
painter with my hand against your back
here is the dive

America once again Cathay
with no flags or only
a serpent baring his teeth
into the dark and your sinuous rill
like a drunk’s piss
or a thief’s jugular
flying out beyond Saturn out
to where our words feel the empire at its feet
another supplicant crawling to you
an eager babe to a new father

put your head out the window
and turn on the cassette
this trip is voice-activated

heave ho and pull
by the legions its mane
is bombazine pavement
lurid paint fell on the field
white blood
pull tight on the chains
and move its head over the mountain
your sweat its grease mount the wooden bull
inside my machine
where every door is chambered by a woman
watching your every move
and every sleep is recorded
with your sigil

nameless son
pure and undivided
let me sever your leash to run
your muscles like a young dog’s over the heather
your head surfacing
like a dolphin’s
through the gamboge flax
the kingdom of your atria
shuddering against the sky
