Farmworkers in Mexico Lack Basic Social Security

Farmworkers on both sides of the US-Mexico border play a huge role in agriculture, but many still lack basic protections. In a March 2026 article, originally published in Spanish by La Jornada and republished in English by Mexico Solidarity Media, Mireya Cuéllar reported that few agricultural workers in San Quintín Valley, in Baja California, Mexico, are registered with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). According to a 2022 agricultural census conducted by Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), more than 47,000 people work in the municipality’s advanced agricultural industry, but only about 5,000 farmworkers are registered with IMSS. The gap represents thousands of farmworkers who labor without adequate access to healthcare or benefits.
