Technical debt that doesn’t impact user experience isn’t really debt—it’s just code that works.
The semantic search feature went through seven iterations over six months, each adding capabilities that users explicitly requested based on their actual usage patterns. The final version was more sophisticated than the original, but each layer of complexity was justified by demonstrated user need rather than engineering speculation.
The Product-Engineering Balance
The tension between engineering standards and user value is one of the most challenging aspects of software development. Engineers are trained to build robust, scalable, well-architected systems. Users want tools that solve their problems efficiently. These goals often conflict, especially in the early stages of feature development.
The semantic search experience taught me that user validation should come before technical optimization. It’s easier to improve the architecture of a feature that users love than it is to find users for a feature with perfect architecture.
