The Difference Between Local and Independent Media: From Baltimore To Palestine

On today’s episode on the Project Censored Show, co-host Eleanor Goldfield sits down with author, podcast host and organizer Lawrence Grandpre to talk about the important distinction between local and independent media. They also discuss the fallacy of objectivity, and the propagandistic and nuanced tactics that dehumanize and flatten – from Baltimore to Palestine. Lawrence and Eleanor dig into the importance of community-based media in not just informing but in connecting people with their political agency, and how solidarity means understanding our different lived experiences, not trying to monotone or oversimplify them. We can handle complex ideas, situations, and struggles – and a lot of that starts with critical media literacy.

Notes:

Lawrence Grandpre is a political commentator for Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, or LBS, a grassroots think tank out of Baltimore, focused on advancing self-determination for working class Black communities in Maryland. He is host of the Political Commentary Corner podcast, co-host the In Search of Black Power Podcast, and co-author of The Black Book: Reflections from the Baltimore Grassroots.
