Black Youth in the Media: Hearing About Them— Not From Them

On this episode of the Project Censored Show, co-host Eleanor Goldfield sits down with Tianna Jameswhite, the Editor-in-Chief of Morgan State University’s student led newspaper, The Spokesman. Tianna talks about how media portrays Black youth, highlighting how often we hear about them, without hearing from them. They talk about the over-policing of Black communities that crosses over into Black colleges and universities, leaving little to no space for Black youth to simply exist. They discuss the need for alternatives inside and outside of higher ed as well as the dearth of radical Black history being taught in HBCUs, and how places that should be about exploration and learning are often treated as whitewashed pipelines to a system that continues to devalue and dehumanize Black lives.

Notes:
Tianna Jameswhite is a young Black journalist based in Baltimore who concerns themselves with the situation of African people across the diaspora. Currently, they serve as the Editor-in-Chief of Morgan State University’s student led newspaper, The Spokesman.
