Bengal BJP on August 29 targeted the Trinamool Congress by sharing a video in which some people are seen beating up policemen with sticks. A post by the official X handle of BJP’s West Bengal unit claimed that TMC leader Jayant Das had assaulted sub-inspector Sameer Sinha with a belt. (Archive link)
The X post said a police officer being attacked by TMC leader Jayanta Das was not just a humiliation for one individual, but the “naked truth of Bengal” under Mamata Banerjee’s rule.
Fact Check
A reverse image search of a frame of the video led us to many posts in which the incident was located to Bihar. On the basis of this, by searching keywords, we found a report of Hindustan Times dated November 1, 2024, which said that in the East Champaran district of Bihar, two policemen who had conduct a raid in connection with a kidnapping case had been injured in an attack by miscreants.
Acting on an FIR registered over the reported kidnapping of two cousins from a village in Paharpur, police swung into action and rescued one of the girls from Bettiah. When they went to Sareya Lipani village in East Siswa Panchayat in East Champaran district in search of the second girl, some people along with the family members of a suspect in the case attacked the police team, the report said.
NDTV also shared this video on November 1, 2024 and said that miscreants had attacked a police team in Motihari. Motihari is the district headquarters of East Champaran.

The following day, Motihari police shared another X post announcing the arrest of Kapildev Kumar and Sanjay Kumar for attacking police.
We also noted that West Bengal Police had issued a statement on X regarding the claim by Bengal BJP. Strong legal action was being initiated against those circulating the fake news, it said.

To sum up, video footage of an old incident from Bihar was amplified by BJP Bengal with the false claim it showed a TMC leader attacking cops in West Bengal. This is not the first time, false claims were made from BJP Bengal’s X handle.
