JID, one of my all-time favorite rappers, finally released his new album on Friday, and it’s a masterpiece of art.
It covers a wide range of topics, from broad social issues to deeply introspective personal explorations. The music spans from club bangers to deep and soulful R&B to what can only be called bops. There are jazzy and bluesy undertones throughout.
And lyrically, I think JID blows Kendrick out of the water.
My favorite bar is at the end of VCRs (featuring Vince Staples), when JID says…
Personally, I know nobody never been perfect or move perfectly
I’m prayin’ when you see me at my worst, you see worth in me
Damn, that’s beautiful, hopeful, painful, joyous.
My personal favorite song on the album overall is Glory. The cadence. The flow. The beat. The drop. It’s perfection.
And Community, featuring the Clipse, takes a close second.
It’s very rare that an album comes out that I’ll listen to start-to-finish without skips. This is one of those albums.
Even the album cover is a gorgeous work of art in a way that most hip-hop album covers just aren’t.
