Lasting Impact

While GGI is no longer a dominant player in Linux graphics, its goals remain relevant. The challenges it aimed to solve—fragmentation, portability, and security—continue to shape modern graphics architecture. Frameworks such as Wayland, Mesa, and kernel-based graphics subsystems still wrestle with similar trade-offs, though with more mature ecosystems and hardware support.

For developers and historians of Linux graphics, GGI stands as an important case study in how open-source communities experiment with architectural improvements, even if the projects themselves don’t achieve mainstream adoption.
