Senior IT Accessibility Specialist App/Web

Primary Function

The Senior IT Accessibility Specialist will provide subject matter expertise regarding Section 508 program & policy support.

Scope of Work

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position.

  • Serve as a client liaison to provide guidance for Section 508 compliance and Trusted Tester methodologies.
  • Draft and maintain Section 508 policy and process documentation.
  • Provide consultation services throughout the software development and procurement lifecycle to ensure delivery of Section 508 conformant software and hardware products.
  • Validate reported Section 508 issues.
  • Provide direction and guidance to IT Accessibility Specialists.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and demonstrate the ability to prioritize and multi-task a variety of demanding assignments
  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Able to acquire IT level I federal clearance.
  • Capable of evaluating web pages, web applications, and software for Section 508 compliance according to the DHS Trusted Tester 5.1 process.
  • Capable of creating Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs) and Remediation Plan templates based on Section 508 accessibility testing for each website or application tested.
  • Capable of managing and maintaining storage of all testing-related documentation, including ACRs and Remediation Plans.
  • Capable of meeting regularly with development team Project Managers or points of contact (POCs) to review Section 508 test results.
  • Capable of developing 508 compliant documents for the Section 508 Program Management.
  • Capable of developing and delivering Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) events on Section 508 web/application accessibility standards.
  • DHS Trusted Tester certified (or willing to quickly obtain).
  • Familiar with web software development (i.e., PowerApps, HTML, CSS, and/or JavaScript).
  • Proficient with the following software:
    • Microsoft Windows 11.
    • Microsoft 365 Office Suite.
    • Adobe Acrobat.
    • Freedom Scientific Fusion.
    • Job Access With Speech (JAWS).
    • ZoomText.
    • Allyant Commonlook Office/PDF Suite (recommended).
    • Colour Contrast Analyser (CCA).
    • SSA Accessible Name and Description Inspector (ANDI).
    • DHS Accessibility Conformance Reporting Tool (ACRT).
  • Must comply with all Section 508 Content Testing capability.

Education and Experience

  • Five years experience working in a department or agency Section 508 compliance/accessibility program office.
  • Two years of experience creating Section 508 policy and integrating new guidelines into existing policy.
  • Three years of experience in evaluating, documenting, reporting, and validating program applications, websites, and other developed Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for Section 508 compliance.
  • Three years experience working with the federal acquisition process and requirements and with Enterprise IT Lifecycle.
  • Four (4) to six (6) years of experience working in the accessibility field.
  • Should have experience with assistive technologies across multiple platforms, including screen readers, magnification, and read-aloud tools.
  • Must have effective working experience with a variety of accessibility verification tools, assistive technologies, and accessibility standards.

The salary range for a typical candidate is USD $75,000-$95,000 and varies based on location, education, and years of experience.
